Easy Guiso Recipe

A classic Mexican food dish

guiso recipe

Here in Texas, you'll find guiso on the menu at every Mexican food restaurant. This guiso recipe is so easy that you can save the money and make it at home. Serves 4. Prep Time 10-15 minutes, cook time 1 hour.

You'll need:

  • 2 lbs. stew meat
  • 1.5 Tablespoons Salt
  • 3 Tbsp. oil
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • Small onion chopped
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 quart water
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • Several turns of fresh cracked black pepper (if you have it.)

While heating the oil over medium high heat in a 4 quart (cast iron works great) dutch oven, sprinkle the stew meat with salt.

Brown the meat in a small amount of oil, add flour and stir to coat.

Add all other ingredients, reduce heat to medium low simmer for at least an hour.

Use a slotted spoon to serve.

This is truly delicious! Watch for additional spin-off recipes made from this prepared dish.

Serve with flour tortillas, Spanish rice, guacamole, pico de gallo, refried beans, and a margarita. Or skip the cooking altogether and just drink the margaritas...wait...that's what I'd do. Enjoy!
