Fried Green Tomatoes

The movie made them famous, but fried green tomatoes have long been a Southern side dish. You can also serve them as an easy appetizer or finger food. This easy recipe will make you want to drink a tall glass of lemonade and sit on the front porch in a rocking chair.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large green tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions:

In a bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk. In another bowl, mix flour, salt, and couple or three dashes of pepper. Dip tomatoes in milk mixture, then in flour mixture. Fry in 1 inch of hot oil 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on both sides. *Don't overcrowd the skillet.

Sprinkle lightly with salt or seasoning salt as soon as you remove from oil. Drain on paper towels.

I like them served with Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing, but they're good alone, too!
