General Food Substitutions

If you don't have this, use this: these are your everyday food substitutions

1 cup buttermilk= 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar plus milk to equal 1 cup (stir; let stand 5 minutes)

1 Tbsp. cornstarch= 2 Tbsp all purpose flour or 2 tsp. of arrowroot

1 whole egg= 2 egg yolks plus 1 teaspoon cold water

1 small clove garlic= 1/8 tsp. garlic powder

1 cup tomato sauce= 1/2 cup tomato paste plus 1/2 cup cold water

1 teaspoon vinegar= 2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 cup whole milk= 1 cup skim milk plus 2 Tbsp melted butter

1 tsp baking powder= 1/4 tsp baking soda plus 1/2 tsp cream of tartar

1 cup ketchup (catsup)= 1 c. tomato sauce plus 1/2 c sugar and 2 Tbsp. vinegar (for use in cooking)

1 cup powdered sugar= 1 c. granulated sugar plus 1 tsp. cornstarch

1/2 cup brown sugar= 1/2 c. granulated sugar plus 2 Tbsp. molasses

1 cup tomato juice= 1/2 cup of tomato sauce plus 1/2 cup water
